Spotlight on... Anti-Bullying
At Swanmore College, we are committed to ensuring all pupils feel safe, supported and valued. Bullying of any kind is not tolerated, and we work proactively with pupils, staff and families to prevent it and address concerns quickly.
This Spotlight explains what bullying is, how we respond, and how parents and carers can help.
Some facts for you
- We use the Diana Award definition of bullying: “Repeated negative behaviour that is intended to make others feel upset, uncomfortable or unsafe.”
- Bullying can be physical, verbal, indirect or online, including cyberbullying.
- All bullying concerns are taken seriously, investigated promptly and logged centrally.
- Pupils are encouraged to report bullying concerns about themselves or others.
- Parents, carers and pupils can report concerns by emailing: antibullying@swanmore-sec.hants.sch.uk

The biggest challenge
Bullying can sometimes be hidden or subtle, particularly online or within friendship groups. Pupils may be reluctant to speak up because they worry about making things worse or being seen as “telling tales”.
Our challenge is to ensure pupils feel confident to report concerns early, knowing they will be listened to, supported and taken seriously.
What happens when bullying is reported?
- Concerns are investigated as quickly as possible, usually within 24–48 hours
- Pupils are spoken to sensitively and kept informed
- Parents and carers are contacted where appropriate
- Support is put in place for pupils who have been bullied
- Appropriate sanctions are applied if bullying behaviour is confirmed
- Incidents are monitored to ensure the issue is resolved
Bullying that occurs outside of school, including online, will be addressed if it impacts pupils’ wellbeing or school life.
How can you help?
Parents and carers can help by:
- Talking regularly with your child about friendships and online behaviour
- Encouraging them to speak to a trusted adult if they are worried
- Reassuring them that bullying is never their fault
- Sharing concerns with the College promptly, even if you are unsure
All information shared with the College is treated confidentially and sensitively.
Where can pupils get help?
Pupils can get help by:
- Speaking to their Form Tutor
- Talking to their Head of Year or Deputy Head of Year
- Speaking to any trusted member of staff
- Seeking support from our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors
- Asking a parent or carer to contact the College on their behalf
If a pupil is worried about bullying, they should speak to a trusted adult or email antibullying@swanmore-sec.hants.sch.uk. Concerns will always be taken seriously.
