Attendance - every day counts

At Swanmore College, we believe that every day in school matters. Regular attendance plays a vital role in helping young people achieve their potential, build positive relationships and make the most of the opportunities available to them.

When pupils attend school consistently, they are better placed to engage with their learning, develop confidence and feel a strong sense of belonging within our college community. Attendance is one of the most important foundations for success, both in school and beyond.

Punctuality Matters Too

Arriving on time by 8:20am sets a positive mindset for the day and ensure your child does not miss important learning. 

A positive start to the day helps pupils settle quickly, engage fully in their learning and avoid missing important information at the start of lessons.

It also allows pupils to take part in tutor time, connect with their peers and begin the day feeling prepared and organised. Consistent punctuality helps establish positive habits that support success both in school and beyond.

Even small amounts of absence can add up over the course of a school year:

  • 100% attendance = 0 days missed
  • 95% attendance = around 10 days missed
  • 90% attendance = around 19 days missed
  • 85% attendance = around 29 days missed

Maintaining strong attendance helps pupils make the most of every learning opportunity and supports them to achieve their best.

Swanmore College Open Evening – early closure

Swanmore College will be holding its Open Evening on Thursday, 24 September 2026, welcoming prospective pupils and their families to explore the College, meet staff and find out more about life at Swanmore.

If you have friends or family who are currently considering secondary school options for their child, please do share the details with them. No booking is required.

To allow preparations to take place, the College will close to pupils at 12.40pm on this day. Buses and taxis have been requested to arrive at 12.40pm to collect pupils.

Please note that there will be no after-school clubs or activities on Thursday, 24 September.

The Big Future: Pupil survey

The Children’s Commissioner for England has asked schools to share The Big Future survey, giving children and young people the opportunity to share their experiences, views and aspirations.

We are encouraging pupils at Swanmore College to take part so that their voices can help inform what the Children’s Commissioner shares with Government about the issues that matter to young people.

Unifrog: Virtual University Fair (Years 10 and 11)

Pupils in Years 10 and 11, along with their parents and carers, are invited to attend Unifrog’s upcoming Virtual University Fair. Whether pupils are just beginning to explore future study options or already have specific institutions in mind, this live online event offers a valuable opportunity to research post-18 pathways.

Swanmore Leisure - Fitness Suite Club cancellations

Please note that Fitness Suite Club will not take place on the following dates due to other College events:

  • Tuesday, 22 September 
  • Thursday, 24 September
  • Tuesday, 29 September

Fitness Suite Club will run as normal on all other scheduled dates.

Parking

Swanmore Parish Council has received several complaints regarding parking whilst dropping off and collecting pupils outside the College and surrounding area.

As you are aware, a no waiting at any time restriction (double yellow lines) has been implemented on New Road.  This is to enable pupils to leave safely. Hampshire County Council parking enforcement teams intend to visit Swanmore on a regular basis to carry out enforcement. 

Please do not park on the zigzag lines near to the College. These areas must be kept clear for the sake of our children. These are next to a very busy entrance/exit for the College and the lines are there to provide a clear area where children can cross safely. The zigzags are there to allow drivers to see pedestrians clearly.

We appeal to you not to park on residents' driveways or obstruct driveways and not to park across the drop-down pavements where children need to cross. If you are collecting pupils, please use the various car parks available to you in the village and be considerate to residents. Alternatively, you could plan to collect your child when the buses/cars have dispersed at 3.15pm. 

Park and Stride locations are:

  • Large car park on Church Road opposite Barnaby's Coffee Shop (Walk time: 14 minutes)
  • Village Hall (Opposite Swanmore College) 
  • Skatepark (Walk time: 3 minutes) 
  • Broad Lane car park next to the cricket pavilion (Walk time: 4 mins)

Does your Year 7 or 8 pupil need a break from the hustle of the school day? We’re offering a welcoming, low-pressure space every Tuesday lunchtime where they can unwind, de-stress, and get creative.

Why encourage them to come along?

Zero Pressure: This isn’t a lesson - there are no grades and no experience is needed.
Mental Wellbeing: It’s a therapeutic space designed to help pupils manage stress and express themselves freely.
Creative Freedom: Whether they want to learn new techniques or just doodle and chat, it’s all about discovery.

SEND – new booking system for parents/carers

If your child has an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and you wish to book an Annual Review meeting, you will have received separate communication regarding this process.

Is your family in receipt of Universal Credit?

If your household receives Universal Credit, your child may be eligible for Free School Meals (FSM). Government guidance estimates this saves families around £500 per year per child. Under the new two-tier system, pupils qualifying for Targeted FSM (household income of £7,400 or less per year) also secure Pupil Premium support.

Daily meal allowances are accessed discreetly using our secure thumbprint system - exactly like all other pupils - giving full access to our complete food range at breakfast, break, and lunch in the Swan Café and other food outlets.

If your child is not currently receiving FSM and you believe they may be eligible, you can check their eligibility using Hampshire County Council's online portal. All applications are handled with strict confidentiality. Please check your eligibility or submit an application online as soon as possible by visiting Hampshire's portal - click here to open.

Year 11 pupils planning their next steps after GCSEs are advised that online applications for September 2027 entry are now officially open for both Barton Peveril Sixth Form College and Peter Symonds College.

Important Reminders for Pupils:

  • Do not wait until the deadline to apply; completing applications early ensures ample time to prepare for guidance chats and college interviews.

  • Pupils can apply to multiple sixth form colleges to keep their options open before making a final decision after receiving their GCSE results.

My Journey Hampshire: Just the Journey maps

My Journey Hampshire provides Just the Journey maps for secondary schools across Hampshire, designed to help new Year 7 pupils become more independent when travelling to and from school.

A dedicated map is available for Swanmore College, with useful local information including footpaths, bus stops, crossing points and College entrance points, alongside advice on journey planning and travelling safely.

The University of Oxford STEM outreach: COMPOS Physics Programme 2026-27

One week left to register your interest for the 2026-2027 programme!

Pupils from Years 10, 11 and12 with a strong interest in maths and physics are encouraged to apply for COMPOS. A programme out of the University of Oxford’s physics department, COMPOS offers state-school pupils a full bursary to participate in online, super-curricula Oxbridge-style tutoring in physics and maths to challenge them beyond the school curriculum and to help them develop their problem-solving skills.

COMPOS runs from late October 2026 to July 2027 for Years 10 and 12, and until February half-term 2027 for Year 11.

How to apply

Step 1: Register interest by 24 September
Pupils must complete the online registration form to express their interest in joining the programme.

Step 2: Complete entrance assignments by 1 October
Pupils must complete both the Maths and Physics Entrance Assignments for their year group. These form part of the selection process for places on the programme.
