Vision statement:

Our Mathematics Department aspires to foster a culture where every student can learn, enjoy, and succeed in mathematics. Guided by the principles of the NCETM and the Five Big Ideas in Teaching for Mastery, we are committed to:

  • Ensuring all students develop a deep, connected, and coherent understanding of mathematical concepts, enabling them to reason, communicate, and apply their knowledge confidently in a variety of contexts.
  • Designing lessons that build upon prior learning, use carefully chosen representations to expose mathematical structure, and provide purposeful variation to highlight key features and relationships within mathematics.
  • Developing both procedural fluency and conceptual understanding in tandem, recognising that each supports and enhances the other.
  • Cultivating mathematical thinking by encouraging students to look for patterns, make connections, conjecture, reason, and generalise, using precise mathematical language to communicate their ideas effectively.
  • Creating an inclusive classroom environment where all students progress together, with support and challenge tailored to individual needs, and where misconceptions are addressed promptly to ensure no learner is left behind.
  • Supporting teachers' continual professional development and collaboration, so that our teaching practice is informed by evidence, reflective dialogue, and a shared commitment to excellence in mathematics education.

Through this vision, we aim to empower every learner to become a confident, resilient, and creative mathematician, equipped for lifelong success.
