Science takes centre stage at Swanmore

Year 8 pupils enjoyed an action-packed Education Roadshow exploring the surprising science behind the materials all around us.

Welcome to the Material World

Science took to the stage at Swanmore this week as our Year 8 pupils enjoyed a visit from the Education Roadshow!

This year’s show, Material World: Engineering the Future, used live theatre, demonstrations and plenty of audience interaction to explore the surprising science behind the materials we use every day.

From the things we carry in our pockets to technology used in engineering and aerospace, pupils discovered that there is much more to the materials around us than meets the eye. The show challenged them to think about why different materials are chosen for different jobs and how scientists and engineers are developing new ideas for the future.

Along the way, pupils saw that STEM is about much more than formulas and facts. Creativity, curiosity and problem-solving all played a starring role, with the performance showing how science learnt in the classroom can be used to tackle real-world challenges.

The Education Roadshow is a national initiative from BAE Systems, the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy and is celebrating its 21st year in 2026. Each year, it takes a new STEM-themed performance to schools across Great Britain.

A big thank you to the Education Roadshow team for bringing science and engineering to life for our Year 8 pupils!
