VE Day at Swanmore College

We have been busy commemorating 80 years since VE Day this week. We started yesterday, with Year 7 enjoying their own wartime field party, complete with an exciting Enigma Machine escape room challenge!

The rest of the school took part in a VE Day Connect activity, and across all year groups, pupils explored how each subject played a role in WWII through special themed lesson starters.

Today, the History corridor and Humanities department was transformed, proudly decorated in red, white, and blue for the occasion. At midday, the whole school came together to observe the national 2-minute silence, honouring the bravery and sacrifice of those who served. Followed by taking a step back in time for lunch, with the canteen serving traditional VE Day favourites like corned beef hash and spam, with staff dressed to impress and 1940s music playing throughout the day.

To close the celebrations, pupils gathered at 3pm to listen to Winston Churchill’s historic VE Day speech, broadcast at that very hour on 8th May 1945, marking the end of WWII in Europe.

A truly memorable and meaningful day of reflection, learning, and celebration for our school community.

Kooth Assemblies

Kooth has been visiting Swanmore this week to deliver assemblies to all year groups. Please see attached a letter from them detailing their services and the information they have shared with the pupils this week.

Name change for KS4 Core RE Provision

You should have received an email this week outlining the changes we are making to the core RE provision for pupils in Year 10 and 11 from September. We will be renaming the subject of ‘Religious Education’ to ‘Ethics and Beliefs’ for KS4 at Swanmore College, in a bid to foster inclusivity and reflect the evolving societal landscape whilst still fulfilling our statutory obligation to educate all pupils within religious education. Furthermore, this change will clearly differentiate compulsory core RE from GCSE Religious Studies. If you have any questions about these changes, please email: re-help@swanmore-sec.hants.sch.uk

There are no specific items for Year 7 only.

Year 8

The nursing team will be in school to administer the HPV vaccine to Year 8 pupils next Thursday, 15 May. If you have not yet done so, please click the link below for the electronic consent form and information about the vaccine. Access to the form will close two working days prior to the session.

Year 11

Good luck to all Year 11 pupils as they embark on their GCSEs. Pupils have been issued with their individual exam timetables, but the full timetable can also be found on our website: Swanmore School - GCSE exam timetable 2025. Pupils should remain in school all day until half term, after which point they will only be required to come in for their exams.
