Take Flight at Swanmore: launching our new curriculum

You spoke. We listened. Together, we thrive.

Take flight at Swanmore

Listening carefully. Charting the course. Moving forward together.

Over the past year, we’ve listened to hundreds of pupils and families. What you shared has shaped what comes next.

Every successful journey begins by checking the conditions, listening to those on board, and making sure the route ahead is clear.

Over the past year, Swanmore College has taken time to pause, listen and reflect. Through surveys, forums and targeted feedback sessions, hundreds of pupils and parents have shared their experiences of life at Swanmore – what is working well, what feels unclear, and what they believe will make the greatest difference moving forward.

What we heard was honest, thoughtful and incredibly valuable. It has given us a clearer picture not only of where pupils are now, but of what they need to grow, thrive and move forward with confidence.

This is why we are launching The Swanmore Curriculum now.

What parents and pupils told us:

1 Clarity in learning matters
Pupils want to understand not just what they are learning, but why, when and how it connects over time – alongside wellbeing tools that help them thrive long after they leave Swanmore.
2 Parents want to feel informed and equipped
Families want clear, consistent information about curriculum content, wellbeing support, assessment windows and post-16 pathways – shared in a way that supports both academic and emotional needs.
3 Swanmore Life needs to be more visible
Parents and pupils want to see more clearly how learning, personal development and support fit together across Years 7–11.

These messages set the direction. The next step was deciding how best to respond.

In your words:

"Help us understand what our child is learning, when key assessments happen, and what support is available – so we can support them well."

A clearer view helps families feel confident, not overwhelmed.

★ Information at the right time allows parents to support learning.

The Swanmore Curriculum is our response to what we have heard:

Rather than making isolated changes, we have taken a step back to look at the whole journey a pupil takes through Swanmore – from their first days in Year 7 to their final preparations for post-16 destinations.

Our aim is simple but ambitious:
To make learning, development and wellbeing feel connected, purposeful and visible, allowing our pupils to soar.

What this means in practice for families

  • Clearer insight into what pupils are learning and why
  • Better visibility of wellbeing and personal development support
  • Improved communication around key academic moments and future planning
  • Reassurance that learning is carefully sequenced, not rushed or reactive

This is not about change for change’s sake. It is about ensuring that the route ahead is clearly signposted, well supported and shaped around the needs of the pupils travelling it.

Why the curriculum has a clear, unified look:

As part of this work, we have introduced a new visual identity for the curriculum, supported by clear vision statements.

We know that visuals and language alone do not create meaningful change. However, a shared identity plays an important role in helping a community understand what it stands for and where it is heading.

By bringing the curriculum together under one clear framework, we:

  • Create consistency for pupils, parents and staff
  • Make Swanmore Life easier to understand and talk about
  • Reinforce shared expectations and shared responsibility

Importantly, this work has not been done in isolation. Drafts of the curriculum branding were shared with 12 Key Stage 3 English classes – around 300 pupils – whose feedback helped us refine and improve the final approach before launch.

This reflects our belief that the strongest direction is shaped together.

We want to hear from you:

Throughout 2026-2027, we will ask you to judge our progress against these 3 ‘Voice’ statements’.   We will work with you to give you opportunities to comment, shape and contribute your view to the conversation as we review and refine The Swanmore Curriculum.

As a community, we may not always agree on how to manage and deliver this Curriculum, but we are committed to hearing your views and explaining what we are doing and why. We will prioritise making Swanmore Life visible, and ensuring the Swanmore Campus is a place where our community works together to thrive.

Next: Your child's journey through Swanmore

The Swanmore Curriculum is built around four connected elements, each with its own clear vision and symbolised by a distinctive hat. Together, these elements set out what we want every pupil to experience, develop and achieve during their time at Swanmore.

Each element is explored in more detail through our “Spotlight on…” series of articles.
