Year 7 - Exploring Physical Literacy

Pupils will explore the concept and understand the importance of 'physical literacy'.  Competence, confidence, knowledge and understanding, and motivation are covered to help students realise what underpins physical literacy and how it can be developed.

Sports and physical activities will be rotated across the different classes within the year group, each half term:

Unit 1 - Movement Competence

Competence

Pupils will understand how PE can develop their competence across a variety of activities.

Practice

Pupils will have the opportunity to explore the concept of practice and how it can support learning and development in PE.

Skills and Techniques

Pupils will understand the difference between skills and techniques and how they apply to PE. 

Providing Feedback

Pupils will learn how to analyse performance in order to provide meaningful and constructive feedback to improve competence in others. 

Acting on Feedback

Pupils will receive feedback and be tasked with acting on that feedback to demonstrate progress.

Performance

Pupils will understand the term performance in relation to PE and demonstrating competence.

Unit 2 - Confidence

Confidence

Pupils will understand what confidence is and work on building and improving confidence through participation in Sport and Physical Activity. 

Attitudes

Pupils will understand what is meant by the term ‘attitudes’ and demonstrate and understanding of how attitudes can have an impact on all challenges faced.

Positive approaches to PE

Pupils will gain an understanding of positive approaches to PE to ensure they get the most from their curriculum. 

Comfort Zones

Pupils will gain insight and understanding to the term comfort zones. They will analyse what they deem to be their own comfort zones and consider the advantages of pushing themselves out of these zones.

Failure

Pupils will understand the term 'failure' and analyse the role it has in learning in day-to-day experiences and in sport.

Growth Mindset

Pupils will gain insight and understanding to the term comfort zones. They will analyse what they deem to be their own comfort zones and consider the advantages of pushing themselves out of these zones.

Unit 3 - Knowledge and Understanding

PE, Sports and Physical Activity

Pupils will gain an understanding of the fundamental differences between Sport, PE and Physical Activity.

Fitness

Pupils will understand what is meant by the term 'fitness' and understand its importance in PE, sport and everyday life.

Physical Benefits

Pupils will gain an insight into and an understanding of the benefits that PE can have on their physical health.

Mental Benefits

Pupils will gain an insight into and an understanding of the benefits that PE can have on their mental and emotional health.

Social Benefits

Pupils will gain an insight into and an understanding of the benefits that PE can have on their social health and wellbeing, in and out of the College.

Emotions and Activity

Pupils will develop a better understanding of their own emotions and analyse when these emotions might change based on different situations and scenarios.

Unit 4 - Motivation

Intrinsic Motivation

Pupils will have an understanding of intrinsic motivation and the positive benefits of being intrinsically motivated. 

Extrinsic Motivation

Pupils will gain an understanding of extrinsic motivation and the positive benefits of being extrinsically motivated. 

Setting Goals

Pupils will continue to develop and demonstrate the tools required to set meaningful and impactful goals. 

Celebrate Progress

Pupils will have an opportunity to celebrate progression, over outcome and reflect on how this is transferable in other aspects of their lives. 

Persistence

Pupils will understand what persistence is and demonstrate it when faced with a challenge.

Determination

Pupils will reflect on prior learning from 'persistence' and understand the meaning of the term determination and how to demonstrate it.

Medium Term Objective: How can we use our fundamental sporting concepts to be a successful and knowledgeable sports performer in competition?
8 How do you support teammates whilst trying to go forward and look to penetrate the opposition? How can we improve our coordination and movement to strike equipment effectively? How can we use our positions and formations to help defend in numbers? How does our agility, balance, dodging and side-stepping help to improve our performance? How do we communicate effectively to enable creativity and solve problems? How is our performance affected by improving our running for speed, for distance and throwing for accuracy?
Medium Term Objective: Are we able to use our knowledge and fundamental sporting concepts to plan, implement, and evaluate tactics to overcome challenges?
9 How can we plan to dominate possession against opponents? How can we plan to strike equipment in a tactical way to beat an opponent? Whilst in possession, how can we build an attack to go through, around or over an opposition? How can you stop this as a defender? Knowing what we know about health and fitness, can we plan to improve it over time through physical activity? As a defence, how can you plan to restrict opponents and limit their scoring opportunities? Can we analyse and evaluate our technique and plan tactically to run faster, throw further and jump higher?
