World Book Day at Swanmore College: Celebrating the Joy of Reading

Staff at Swanmore College dressed as book and film characters for World Book Day, posing together outside the school building.

Last week, pupils and staff across Swanmore College came together to celebrate World Book Day 2026 with costumes, creativity and a shared love of stories inspired by this year’s theme: Page to Screen.

World Book Day is a national celebration that encourages young people to discover the pleasure of reading. At Swanmore College, the day was marked by highlighting the importance of books, stories and literacy both in the classroom and beyond.

This year’s theme was Page to Screen, celebrating books that have been adapted into films. It was a great opportunity to highlight how powerful stories can travel beyond the page and capture audiences in different ways.

Pupils and staff across the College fully embraced the theme, with many arriving in costume as characters from well-known books that have made their way to the big screen. Departments also joined in by decorating their areas to reflect famous literary worlds. The Humanities team, for example, created a Lord of the Rings-themed space, bringing a touch of Middle-earth to the College and adding to the atmosphere of the day.

Throughout the day there were plenty of conversations about favourite characters, memorable scenes and the books behind the films. It was fantastic to see so many pupils engaging with stories in different ways and celebrating the creativity and imagination that reading inspires.

Supporting Our Readathon

Alongside the celebrations, pupils have also been taking part in our Readathon, raising money for charity by reading and collecting sponsorship.

So far, £153 has been raised during the first week, which is a great start. However, we still have some way to go if we are to beat last year’s fantastic total of £1,000. Last year we saw many generous last-minute donations, so we are hopeful that we can reach – or even exceed – that target again this year!

How to Donate

If you would like to support a pupil taking part, donations can be made online via:
Readathon | Sponsor A Child

The deadline for online donations is Monday 23 March

There will be prizes for the top fundraisers and the most enthusiastic readers, so we encourage everyone to keep reading and collecting sponsorship!

Thank you to everyone who helped make World Book Day such a memorable celebration of reading at Swanmore College.
