Bright Ideas in Action: Year 7 Take on STEM Challenge

Collaboration, curiosity and confidence were on full display as Year 7 pupils took part in an engaging STEM event designed to bring real-world engineering and physics to life.

On Friday, 28 November 2025, Swanmore Main Hall was transformed into a hub of innovation as 90 Year 7 pupils worked in teams to tackle a series of practical STEM challenges. The event encouraged pupils to think creatively, test ideas, and collaborate under time and design constraints.

The first activity challenged teams to build a free-standing marble run using only card, paper straws and tape. Rather than focusing on speed, pupils were tasked with controlling movement — designing structures that would allow a marble to travel from height to table as slowly as possible. All teams successfully completed the challenge, with Group 7 achieving the winning time of 5.16 seconds.

Pupils then moved on to an invention challenge, where each team designed a brand-new product rooted in real-world physics. Groups presented their ideas to the audience, pitching their concepts with clarity and confidence. Judges were particularly impressed by the creativity and communication skills demonstrated, awarding Team 4 first place for their outstanding design and presentation.

The College would like to thank Automate UK for generously providing all resources for the event free of charge, helping to create a meaningful and inspiring learning experience for our pupils.
