Y7 Parent MFL Workshop: Get the Confidence to Help at Home

Image shows the Swanmore MFL logo and the words Y7 parent workshop for languages

At Swanmore College, we are committed to forging strong relationships between home and school and ensuring parents feel equipped to support their child’s learning. We understand that helping with French or Spanish homework can feel challenging if you haven’t studied a language recently!

Languages teacher, Mrs Hinson, is hosting a dedicated workshop for parents and carers of Year 7 pupils to address this exact challenge. This session is specifically designed to boost your confidence and provide you with the necessary knowledge to effectively support your child’s Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) independent learning at home.

My name is Mrs Hinson and I'm a teacher of languages here at Swanmore College.

00:00:09

I ran some parental workshops last year which were very successful.

00:00:14

I had some very positive feedback.

00:00:16

So I'm going to run the workshop again this year.

00:00:19

I will run one workshop once a term, the first one being in autumn term, the next one being in spring term and the final one in the summer term.

00:00:29

The first workshop will be based on independent learning.

00:00:34

I will go through the expectations, how much time do they spend learning the vocabulary, what is the best strategies to learn your vocabulary, what is expected to do for the homework as well using their lesson booklet and their knowledge organiser.

00:00:51

The language, the workshop that I'm doing will apply to both Spanish and French.

00:00:57

So it doesn't matter if your child does either language, it will apply.

00:01:01

And also, once your child knows how to do the homework and how you can support your child in Year 7, the same system will apply in Year 8, Year 9, all the way up to Year 11.

00:01:12

So it will be a very beneficial workshop to attend to be able to support your child all the way through, because they have to do a language in Year 7, 8 and 9, and only after that, after Year 9, they decide whether they want to carry on for GCSEs.

00:01:26

So again, the first workshop is on Thursday, 23rd of October at 6pm.

00:01:33

All you need to bring is your child's lesson booklet, Spanish or French, and then their knowledge organiser.

00:01:42

And then I will show you how to complete the homework, or how they should be completing the homework.

00:01:48

The class teacher should have gone through the same process with your child.

00:01:54

but they might have forgotten or they might have got confused or they're not quite sure what to do.

00:01:59

And if you ask them, they might not be able to help you.

00:02:02

But if I give you the information, then you'll be able to know how to support them and give you more confidence to, you know, to support your child.

00:02:11

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in my first workshop on the 23rd of October at 6pm.

00:02:18

Thank you.

This one-hour workshop will demystify the process and show you precisely how to help, regardless of whether your child is studying Spanish or French. Mrs Hinson will clearly explain:

  • The Expectations: What exactly is meant by independent learning and what is expected for MFL homework.

  • The Tools: How to use the essential resources—your child’s Lesson Booklet and Knowledge Organiser—so you can guide them.

  • Best Strategies: The most effective techniques for learning and retaining vocabulary, empowering you to check their work with confidence.

Attending this workshop is an investment that pays off for years, as the core system for independent learning and home support remains consistent all the way up to Year 11. You will walk away feeling much more confident about your ability to collaborate on your child’s language success.
