Extra-Curricular Clubs

Please find attached details of all the extra-curricular clubs that are being run during the Autumn Term. Most clubs are starting this week (unless stated otherwise). However, there will be no after-college clubs on Thursday 14 September 2023, due to the college closing early for Open Evening. Please note the Y9/10/11 Boys Football Club has been moved to Friday this week and next week instead of Thursday, due to the Open Evening and Y11 Parents Evening taking place.

Blazers and Ties

Pupils should be wearing full uniform, including ties and blazers, now the extremely hot weather has passed. Pupils may remove blazers in lessons, with the permission of the teacher, but they must wear them when arriving / departing and moving around the college site.

Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC)
Hampshire County Council have confirmed that there is no RAAC on the Swanmore College site. We hope this will alleviate any concerns you may have.

Overdrawn Accounts - Food

A reminder to you all that, if your child's Swan Café account is overdrawn, we will only be able to provide them with a main meal (hot). We ask that the account is cleared the following day please.

Dance/Drama Auditions

Auditions for 'CATS' (March Production) and the Dance/Drama Umbrella companies will be taking place during the Open Evening event on Thursday 14 September. The information has been shared with pupils in college, but this is just to confirm the timings:

CATS Dance Auditions: 5:30-6:30pm in the PA Building

CATS Acting Auditions: 6:30-7:30pm in the PA Building

Umbrella Dance Auditions: 7:30-8:30pm in the PA Building

Umbrella Acting Auditions: 7:30-8:30pm in R03

If your child is interested in auditioning for the companies and/or production and hasn't collected a permission letter, please can they see either Mr Coleman or Mrs Avery to collect one before Thursday.

MLF Independent Learning

Y8 & Y9 Languages: The expectation for independent learning for the Languages department is to study 30 minutes a week of the vocabulary as follows:

Week 1 - complete the independent learning booklet

Week 2 - complete the independent learning booklet

Week 3 - revise the vocabulary on Quizlet for a vocabulary quiz in class

The sentence builder for the 3 weeks rotation will be based on the topic studied in class. The pupils will receive on google classroom from the class teacher the link to join the class Quizlet. It is a free vocabulary learning website. The most effective way to learn vocabulary is to learn it regularly, 5 minutes a day.

Y10 & Y11 Languages: The expectation FOR independent learning for the Languages department is to study 1 hour a week. This will include learning a set of vocabulary a week, and/or additional task such as a page of the AQA workbook or completion of the General Conversation Booklet.

The sentence builder will be based on the topic studied in class. The pupils will receive on google classroom from the class teacher the link to join the class Quizlet. It is a free vocabulary learning website. The most effective way to learn vocabulary is to learn it regularly, 10 minutes a day.

Year 7

Google Accounts: If you have not received your Google Guardian email invite then please contact googlehelp@swanmore-sec.hants.sch.uk. By default only parents/carers listed as priority 1 or 2 on our MIS database will receive an invite.

Once you accept you will receive a weekly email from Google on a Friday evening or Saturday morning, summarising any work set on Google Classroom for your child. As a parent/carer you are not given a logon to Google Classroom & you do not require one to receive the email summaries.

We are aware that for some of you, when you accept the Google invite, it re-directs you to a Google Classroom logon page asking for a join code. This is a complete red herring & we have informed Google of the bug. Just close the classroom page. Your acceptance will have been registered. You will only receive a summary email if work has been set on classroom for your child.

CAT Tests: On Tuesday 19 September Year 7 will be completing CAT tests. The tests will be completed during tutor time and period 1 and 2 on Chromebooks or in IT Suites. All pupils in Year 7 will be sitting these tests at the same time. Please do emphasise to your child that these tests are a positive, and absolutely nothing to worry about. They cannot prepare for these assessments: they are purely there to help teaching staff learn more about how to support them. These assessments are flexible and allow pupils as much time as they need to complete them. Some pupils may take longer than others to finish.

Can we please ask that pupils bring their headphones with them for these assessments. The computers have a standard headphone jack and so newer iPhone headphones/wireless headphones will not be suitable. We will have a very small number of headphones available, so please make sure your child has them with them on the correct day of the test.

The results of these tests will be shared in due course.
