In renaming the subject of Religious Education to Ethics and Beliefs at Swanmore College, we aim to foster inclusivity and reflect the evolving societal landscape whilst still fulfilling our statutory obligation to educate all pupils within religious education. The term ‘Ethics and Beliefs’ better represents a broad range of ideologies and philosophies, incorporating diverse cultural and non-religious perspectives that are relevant in contemporary Britain.

This change would apply only to Year 10 and Year 11 core RE, while ‘Religious Education’ in Years 7, 8, and 9 would remain unchanged.

By renaming the subject at Key Stage 4, we highlight the role of ethics in shaping values and society beyond traditional religious frameworks. This ensures that moral and ethical discussions include not just religious viewpoints but also philosophy and secular ethics.

Furthermore, this change will clearly differentiate compulsory core RE from GCSE Religious Studies. This distinction will help Year 9 pupils understand their options when selecting their GCSEs and make it clear how the two subjects connect and are also separate.
