Modern Foreign Languages

We aim to show that learning a foreign language is fun!

All our language classrooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards. We use authentic resources, the latest multi-media technology, and make full use of ICT in our lessons. We encourage our pupils to be independent, active and reflective learners, who enjoy communicating with others.

Pupils entering Swanmore College in Year 7 all study French, a language that many of our pupils will have begun in their primary schools. In Year 8, all pupils start a new second language; Spanish, Italian or German. Pupils are regularly assessed throughout Year 7 and 8 in all four language skills; listening, reading, speaking and writing.

At the end of Year 8, foreign language study becomes optional but we encourage pupils wherever possible to continue with their language study into Years 9, 10 and 11 to gain a GCSE in their chosen language(s). More able linguists should consider taking both French and their second language to the GCSE level. Our pupils sit AQA board examinations and will be examined at the end of Year 11 in all four language skills; listening, reading, speaking and writing.

To enhance the learning experience further we offer various visits abroad throughout the year and we have recently started exchanges with a partner school in Corsica, France and Sachsenheim, Germany. We offer a trip to Paris in Key Stage 4, which also includes plenty of Language and Cultural challenges!

Our homework tasks are set using Show My Homework and links to useful websites are provided in language lessons for pupils to use both in and out of school.

Being able to speak and communicate in a foreign language is a great skill and one much-valued and sought after by colleges, universities and employers.

Have pride in communication – it’s good to talk!
