Pastoral - House System

House System

At the end of Year 7 pupils will move into new VERTICAL House Tutor Groups. These groups comprise of approximately seven pupils from each of the year groups from Year 8 through to Year 11. (Pupils remain primarily in year groupings for their formal lessons).

Swanmore is a large college and belonging to such a house system enables the pupils to help and support each other across the year groups whilst learning to understand and appreciate each other better.

The system also allows the tutor to engage more fully in the process of supporting and mentoring individuals because different year groups are closely monitored via the tracking/reporting system at different times during the year and with just a few pupils in each year group the tutor is able to provide the appropriate amount of assistance and involvement at the right time. Also, other pupils are on hand to peer mentor.

However, often far more importantly from the pupil perspective, is the fact that the House System generates many opportunities for fun and competition as well as encouraging the need to develop personal responsibility via the posts of House officials etc.

The names of the 4 Swanmore Houses were chosen by the pupils in 2006 and they reflect our status as a college of technology and our commitment to caring, enterprise and endeavour.

Each House adopts a charity to support every year and runs events to raise money and awareness for that charity
