Curriculum - Business and Enterprise

Business and Enterprise

They say that money makes the world go round.  It is certainly true that without wealthbeing created, there wouldn’t be the tax revenue to pay for all of the public services we want to be able to access.

It is also true that apart from death and taxes, the only certainty is that things will change.

We are working towards Swanmore having an enterprising culture as this will help to equip our young people with the attributes needed to cope in the 21st century.

Enterprise involves taking risks, showing initiative, and a willingness to undertake new ventures.

In lessons across the curriculum, these attributes are fostered in all sorts of ways.  For example, pupils are encouraged to think of new ways of tackling work set, to take risks with developing their ideas, and to use their initiative in their learning.

However, there are explicit opportunities for pupils to develop these skills.  These opportunities range from extra curricula clubs like STEMNET to setting up fund-raising events for charity, competitions and links with businesses.

Business Studies is a popular Key Stage 4 option subject.  The focus of the course is very much on setting up and running small businesses.  Many of our pupils have parents who run their own businesses and quite a few of the pupils have ambitions to run their own businesses in the future.  What they learn on the course is about how to spot business opportunities, what skills an entrepreneur needs, how to put business ideas into practice, how to build businesses, and the economic context within which businesses operate.

Business and enterprise are “live” subjects: every day, there is something in the news that will have an impact on the business world, and every disaster can bring opportunities.  We want our young people to have a lively interest in the world around them and be able to take their place in the world as enterprising citizens.
